I always wanted to be a marine biologist when I grew up – so naturally I ended up in advertising. (Eventually it dawned on me that Calgary isn’t exactly ranked as a must-see Maritime locale in Conde Naste.) And while it’s not ‘diving with dolphins’, twenty five years spent on the sink-or-swim production side of this business has instilled a CSI-like attention to detail that serves me well as an account manager. Helping keep clients on track and on budget – and able to survive the occasional shark attack.
Every day I look for the small things that give me pause – it’s akin to stopping to smell the roses. The creative environment of advertising is filled with these moments. They may not be ‘gracefully-gliding rays in an azure sea’, but they put wind in my sails nonetheless. I feel fortunate to be one of the few born-and-raised Calgarians (I think there are like ‘three’ at last count) but the siren song of the sea remains a powerful call. Hence, Maui is my spiritual happy place.
